Hyeonseo Lee escaped from North Korea at 17-years-old and began living life as a refugee in China and later in South Korea. Her journey to start a new life in a dangerous land for North Korean refugees, to save her family, and to tell her story to the world so that she can inspire change are some of the reasons Hyeonseo Lee is our #WCW. Lee points out the continued struggles refugees often face even after resettlement:
When trying to get her family out of jail, she ran across a stranger who, without question, paid the money to get them released. This is her message: “I thanked him with all my heart, and I asked him, "Why are you helping me?" "I'm not helping you," he said. "I'm helping the North Korean people." I realized that this was a symbolic moment in my life. The kind stranger symbolized new hope for me and the North Korean people, when we needed it most. And he showed me that the kindness of strangers and the support of the international community are truly the rays of hope we North Korean people need.” People like Lee and the stranger who helped her show just how important it is to help who we can every day.
