People smugglers abandoned 34 refugees in Niger last week. All 34 souls, including 20 children, died of thirst trying to cross the desert into Algeria. Their bodies were found near Assamaka. Lost were 5 men, 9 women, and 20 children.
Libya used to be the place of asylum for refugees fleeing the area, but since its own descent into chaos, Algeria is now the main destination for those fleeing.
It is imperative that we not lose hope. We must continue to share these stories. We must continue to petition governments and groups to help these people. We must volunteer. We must get involved. We must help the voices of those like these 34 lost people be heard.
